ANYCEC's Mission

The mission of the Association of New York City Education Councils is to facilitate the empowerment of parents so they themselves can advocate effectively on behalf of their children, their schools, and their communities.

The Association of New York City Education Councils (ANYCEC) is committed in providing the type of high quality information, resources, guidance, and training required for parents, guardians, and local community leaders to make a quantifiable contribution to the education of the students of their City's public school system.
(We have traveled cross country and have provided our workshops in California and we are working to - free of charge - train public school parents in upstate New York and New Jersey)

We were a key resource for Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer's 2006 report, "Parents Dismissed" on the efficacy of the Community District Education Councils (formerly school boards) http://www.mbpo.org/newsroom_details.asp?id=1056&page=13 and have continued working to help parents and elected officials cooperate in the effort to improve our schools.

Our goal is to prepare concerned citizens to coherently discuss the important issues surrounding public education with a sound base of knowledge, and help them build stronger relationships with their elected representatives in order to have a positive influence on policy and the decision making process.

We are committed to partnering with those individuals and organizations that have proven that their methodology is effective in motivating and inspiring children to more fully engage in their own learning process. Through these collective efforts, students will be ready for life beyond high school, as well as willing and able contributors to this society.

Our Goals For 2009

(Come see what we are about!)

2009 Campaign: "We Are Our Brothers' Keepers"

The Association of New York City Education Councils is committed in creating a place where all public school children, their parents/guardians, and community volunteers can go for consistent, recurring, advocacy and leadership training, resources and guidance. Or we will go to them.

The benefits of ANYCEC training programs are:
  • Prepared citizens who coherently discuss the key issues surrounding public education
  • Stronger partnerships being forged with elected representatives
  • Partnerships are developed with local parents and community organizations
  • Methodology is effective in motivating and inspiring children to engage in learning processes
  • Collective efforts prepare students for life beyond high school as willing and able contributors to society
  • Parents and community leaders actively engage as school partners to improve schools

The Role of Parent & Community Leaders
Parent and community leaders should actively engage with their communities and their local school partners. This facilitation takes on many forms: using various techniques for problem solving, offering timely assistance when a group is stuck, and providing guidance and encouragement. The leaders are guided through scenarios; they decide which approaches are best suited to the needs of their communities. The workshop programs and facilitators set a tone for the discussion in which individual points of view are respected, criticism is constructive, and all members have an equal opportunity to participate.

Educational Partnership for Student Success
The active collaboration among the family, community and the school for the education of any child that includes meaningful, two-way communication, clearly articulated and understood shared goals and expectations, for all parties, and an understanding of the valuable role each plays in a child's education. Implied is the need to ensure that each party has the understanding, skills, knowledge and resources to fulfill their roles and the support of their partners in participating in the process.
